The city we now know as Manchester was once a roman settlement called Mamucium.
Manchester is situated where it is due to confluence of the rivers Medlock and Irwell. It was predominantly a military development to protect roman trade routes.
Small scale industry, commerce and markets gradually established around 1200 AD. Between 1760-1830 during the industrial revolution, the city shifted from a rural/agricultural to an urban/industrialised society.
This great industrial city was a trigger to develop modern planning due to an unprecedented rise in the urban population. The borough of Manchester formed under 1835 Municipal Corporations Act.
Today Manchester is a world-class city offering people a great place to live, work and visit.
